1951. Second impression. 176pp., a frontispiece portrait and a map. This is the true story of two British servicemens' long walk to reach Allied lines in Italy after the Armistice. Escaping from a Nazi train taking them from their POW camp in northern Italy, they walked for 48 days across the Apennines in German-occupied Italy until they reached safety. Medd had walked in Switzerland before the war, so he had a good idea of how to find his way and stay safe. But he was hopelessly ill-equipped. Travelling alone at first, he later teams up with Frank Simms, to whom we owe the book's completion, since Medd was killed before he could finish it. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the spine ends and slight fading to the bottom 1" of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with some foxing and a large stain on the fore edge of the text block. On some pages the foxing has seeped a little way into the fore margin and there is staining near the bottom of the spine edge of pages xiv and xv and more extensive staining on pages 174 and 175. There is a bookplate on the front fixed endpaper and an extensive handwritten note concerning Frank Simms on the front free endpaper. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wesr with some soiling and the spine is slightly faded. The corners are rubbed with small pieces missing and up to about 1/2" is missing from around the top of the spine. About 1" is missing from the bottom of the spine. There are a few tears of up to about 3/4" on the edges and the larger of these have been repaired on the reverse with tape. The wrapper is in an easily removed clear plastic protective cover.
