First American edition, first issue, with misprint "wade" on page 21; fifty woodcut illustrations by John Tenniel ---- From the library of Thomas Wentworth Higginson (1823-1911), with the Unitarian minister's ownership signature "Higginson" on the front flyleaf. One of abolitionist John Brown's secret backers, Higginson wrote numerous articles and books, commanded the First South Carolina Volunteers (the first government-authorized regiment of ex-slaves mustered into the Union army), and inspirited the reclusive poet Emily Dickinson.
