A limited printing of 525 copies, this being numbered 197. Chesterfield (Philip Dormer, 4th Earl of Chesterfield) was one of the foremost men in politics and British affairs during the reign of George ll during the Eighteenth Century. This book collects together many of his letters to his godson and successor, Philip Stanhope covering a wide variety of subjects and presenting a fine insight into life at the time and Chesterfield's own life in particular. The letters were never intended for publication. Includes a reproduced sample of a hand-written letter by Chesterfield ahead of the introduction. Many of the letters are reproduced in the original French. Also includes a smaller collection of letters to A C Stanhope to the rear in a loose pamphlet. Includes 8* b/w photographs protected by glassine paper. xci+316pp. Three quarter bound in white velum with remainder of boards covered in blue cloth. Boards and spine have gilt lettering and a gilt reproduction of Chesterfields arms appears on the front board. Very light foxing appears on several pages. Gilt to upper page edges, remainder of page edges roughly cut. Includes a separate loose appendix inside rear board. Private book-plate on fixed end paper of Sir Francis Danson.
