Paper at front gutter is starting, small skinned spot at upper edge of front paste down. Text is overall clean and bright, occasional finger smudges, lightly and evenly tanned. Frontispiece illustration with tissue guard and six other illustrations throughout. Originally published as a serial in eight numbers in the 'Youth's Companion.' In this form it is considerably enlarged; several chapters or parts of chapters have been added, in order to introduce scene deemed needful for a satisfactory completion of the narrative, but which could not be conveniently brought within the limited space alloted to serial stories in that popular periodical.
