From the inside front cover: "Love Life of the Birds' is a hymn to Nature. It portrays the loveliest of creatures in the culminating moment of their existence, when love exalts them, lends them dazzling personalities, inspires them to the impassioned ceremonies of courtship. Observant philosopher, naturalist by art and vocation, Carlos Selva Andrade describes the nuptial customs of the birds, revealing the true depths of mating instincts and love play with laws as rigid and clear as those which rule human society. The work combines sober science with lyric prose and word-pictures of strange and far-away places, an original approach which fulfills the author's purpose of inspiring a new love and understanding of the birds; in the end they become the closest to us of all living creatures. To charge Axel Amuchastegui with illustrating "Love Life of the Birds" was to place the task in the hands of a painter of nature exceptionally fitted for the observation and portrayal of the most vital, lovely, and brilliant of creatures: the birds. Top bump does not affect the book internally but there is evidence of the bottom bump throughout the book affecting a triangular area 2.5 cm by 2.5cm dust wrapper very slightly frayed Old price in ink to front cover. Apart from the bumping of the corner internally pristine with all plates and tissue guards present. No inscriptions or marking. We bought several copies of this book some years ago from the widow of someone who bought up books to sell when he retired. Unfortunately he did not manage to do this. We think he bought these when they were sold off either as remainders or as transit damaged items as there is bumping of corners to some of them. I am giving this information to explain why we are listing a number of copies but also to point out that these are unread having been in storage since 1952; either the publisher's warehouse, the first bookseller's shop, the home of the would-be bookseller, and lastly in our bookroom. As a result the internal condition of the books is exceptionally clean for a book which is 60 years old. This is a higher cost book, heavier than normal book (1.4 kilos with packing) which will incur extra costs for postage and insurance.
