Reliure en plein maroquin brun fin XIXe signée Capé. Dos à nerfs janséniste. Titre, lieu et date dorés. Large frise intérieure. Tranches dorées. Très bel exemplaire, particulièrement frais. Au commencement du XVIIe siècle, et ce sur une période de trente ans environ, il y eut dans la littérature une passion irraisonnée pour le poème du genre épique dont La Franciade de Ronsard fut une des origines, et on aurait du mal à dénombrer le nombre d' uvres dans ce domaine. Remy de Beauvais composa ainsi une épopée sur la vie de Madeleine en vingt livres, au moment de sa conversion. On ne peut qu'être admiratif du travail d'écriture, de la façon dont l'auteur use des Évangiles et reconstitue la vie de Marie-Madeleine, même si c'est en un style bien éloigné du modèle, hyperbolique, souvent emphatique et lyrique. Sur le même sujet et à la même époque, il y eut le Marie-Madeleine de Desmarets, et La Madeleine de Cotin, Les Larmes de Sainte-Madeleine de Charles de Notre Dame, et d'autres encore (l'Italie connut le même sort durant la même période) ; Marie-Madeleine figurant le héros chrétien dont la vie est ponctuée de deux moments forts, la conversion et la pénitence. La littérature développait ainsi un certain nombre de héros chrétiens plus proches de la pensée spirituelle du XVIIe, elle cherchait à attribuer de grandes uvres littéraires à des personnages de la mythologie chrétienne, comme cela avait été fait pour les héros grecs et latins.
