Bernard Malamud (1914-1986) was one of the best known American Jewish authors of the 20th century. His work often focused on the social issues of his era. He was particularly renowned for his short stories. The Magic Barrel (1960) was Malamud's debut collection of short stories, containing thirteen tales in all. In many of them, the protagonists endeavour to find hope in somewhat bleak urban settings. This collection won the US National Book Award. The Fixer (1967) concerns antisemitism in the Russian Empire. The story is based on the 1913 Beilis case, in which a Jew was unjustly imprisoned in Russia. This novel won both the US National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. Rembrandt's Hat (1973) is another of Malamud's collection of short stories, which intertwine reality and imagination with masterful subtlety. In the publisher's original cloth bindings, with the original unclipped dust wrappers. Externally, cloth is in lovely condition to all volumes but is slightly faded to the spine of The Fixer. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean. Dust wrapper to Magic Barrel is sunned to the spine and rear of the wrap, with a little chipping to the head of the spine and to the folds of the flaps. Rear of the wrap is slightly abraded with tide marks to the lower extremities and to the fold of the rear flap.
