1936. First edition. xi, 301pp., 4 colour plates and 32 black and white illustrations, both full-page and within the text, by H.R. Millar. This is a collection of stories based on books that may be found on a bookshelf in an ordinary room. The object is to give a series of scenes from British history as described by those taking part in them. All detail, and as much conversation as possible, is taken from contemporary sources. Narrative has been turned into direct speech as and when required; but no liberties have been taken with recorded utterances of historic characters. The aim is not to make a connected history of Britain but to give readers the feeling that they are actually witnessing certain scenes and events as these take place. The book is bound in the original ochre cloth covered boards with brown titling on the spine and brown titling with an illustrations on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the top of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with a name and date (1936) written on the front free endpaper. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some soiling and the spine is browned. The top edge is rubbed and chipped and a large piece measuring about 5" long and up to 1 1/2" deep is missing from the top rear edge and part of the top of the spine. Small pieces are missing from the corner tips and bottom of the spine and there are a few small tears on the edges. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers gChild42
