Includes copies of many of the finest Natural History and Colour-Plate works. The introduction to Part I touches on some of the interesting provenances of highlights in the sale: from Sir Thomas Phillipps' library at Thirlestaine House, the 1616 Ben Jonson Workes (Lot 12) and Fernandez de Enciso's Suma Geografia (Lot 9); Levaillant's Oiseaux d'Afrique (Lot 21) and Latham's General History of Birds (Lot 36) both came from the Rudding Park Collection formed by Joseph Radcliffe, 1st Bt (1744-1819); Martyn's Historia plantarum Rariorum (Lot 15) and Smith's rare Specimen of the Botany of New Holland (Lot 20) emanate from James Wyatt's Library at Henham Park in Suffolk, built for John Rous, 1st Earl of Stradbroke (1750-1827) in the 1780s. Other books came from the collection of the famous gardener the Rev. John Clowes of Broughton Hall in Lancashire, including the Sertum Orchidaceum (Lot 40) by John Lindley, Lady Hesketh's great great great grandfather, who famously saved Kew Gardens from development in the nineteenth century." Part II, John James Audubon, the birds of America is a catalogue entirely devoted to Audubon's Birds of America (Lot 50), the copy offered for sale being one of only about 12 remaining in private hands. Part III : fifty-two original watercolour drawings on vellum for Pierre-Joseph Redouté's Les Roses includes introductory essays on Redouté and Les Roses; Josephine, Redouté and Rose-mania 1790 to 1824.
