First Edition. Hardcover. Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951) was the first American to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, in 1930. He is best known for several popular novels: Main Street (1920), Babbitt (1922), Arrowsmith (1925), Elmer Gantry (1927), Dodsworth (1929), and It Can't Happen Here (1935). Main Street, a satirical novel set in the small town that resembled his own home town, Sauk Centre, Minnesota, was an instant commercial success. It sold almost 200,000 copies in its first year. While there are numerous copies of various 1920 printings available, our copy is unusual in that it appears to have been produced for the Australia/New Zealand market. The spine contains the imprint of Whitcombe & Tombs Limited, a major New Zealand publishing house that expanded into Australia, as well as a label for a Sydney bookseller on the front pastedown. It is bound in original red cloth boards, titled in black on the spine and front cover. This binding is unlike any other known copy on the market. SCARCE. Previous owner's name and 1921 date on the front free endpaper. Edges of text block show foxing, as do some pages. No dust jacket. 451 pages. LIT/101816. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 30114
