Beschreibung
J. (Arthur) Partridge (1824-1891) was a Birmingham businessman and Liberal plitician. While his biographical details are scant, he was also the author "On Democracy" (1866) and "The Making of the American Nation" (his best-known work) Here is a history and polemic on the issue of Home Rule for Ireland. Widely-held by institutions but rather uncommon in the Trade. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition. Distinctive cloth binding: the front panel is diagonally divided between green and yellow; titling in black. Clean text; xxvi, 190 pages. This is an ASSOCIATION COPY, with stamps of the "Irish Republican Library" in New York City. There is a previous owner stamp ("Patrick McKenna") on the FFEP with a penciled donation notation ("Donated by Liam Kearney Liam Lynch Club"). Lynch, prominent in the Irish War of Independence, became Commander of the IRA during the Civil War. There are two stamps of the "Irish Republican Library" on the last pages of book, along with a pasted-down inventory number. This New York library was important to the Irish diaspora and its support for an independent Ireland. Textblock is lightly tanned; the front gutter has been reinforced with a linen tape. Light wear to the margins, particularly to the head and foot of the spine. The yellow diagonal shows some soiling. An historically-important subject, and an intriguing object from the Irish struggle. In an archival plastic protecto. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 000879
