Beschreibung
First edition [second state with errata slip] published by Longmans, Green and Co in 1898. This is a very good or better copy. 8vo., green publisher?s boards, with lettering on the front board and backstrip in gilt; a tight and square copy with handling wear, a smattering of dirt marks on the front board, along with dirt marks and a pen mark to the lower board, but in general a bright clean book; a very good copy and better than usually found; well preserved and complete with all maps and illustrations present; housed in a smart presentation box. Interesting previous ownership of Wyndham Charles Knight, relation of Jane Austen, and career military man. His family crest is on the inside board and he has signed his name and dated 1899. He would have paid particular interest to Churchill's recollections of the Malakand Field Force, as Knight served as Captain for the army in the North West Frontier. He was assigned to the Mohmand Field Force between August and October 1897, where-as Malakand took place in September and October of the same year. Captain Knight would go on to serve in the Tirah expedition afterwards that would run into 1898. He was mentioned for his gallantry during the Mohmand Field Force expedition in despatches, as Churchill was for his part by General Binden Blood. The first book published by Winston Churchill. One of 2000 copies published on 14 March 1898 at a price of 7s. 6d. There was only one print run, however a number of the copies have tipped in errata slips immediately proceeding the first folding map as is the case here. Churchill's stirring account of the military campaign of the Malakand Field Force in the North West Frontier led by General Binden Blood. A sharp copy of this rare book, particularly so with the previous ownership attributes. [Woods A1a]. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 003415
