*** BOOK: for a book published 180 years ago, this is in very good clean tight and unmarked condition. Gilt ruled brown boards with highly decorated gilt panelled spine, five bands, title in gilt on brown leather panel, gilt dentelle edges, worn at top. Marbled endpapers and fore and lower edges, top edge very dark blue. Joints are rubbed with no cracks or tears. Hinges have small cracks in the marbled paper. Minor brown spotting throughout, particularly the prelims and verso of the plates. This translation by Moylan is the first English translation.Illustrations by Tony Johannot. Bookplate of Holland House on front pastedown. On one of the prelims is written " - - -Lady Holland, With the translator's respectful com(pliments)". 349 pages, title page vignette, engraved chapter heads, Frontispiece of author, 17 full page india proofs and many more woodcuts in the text. Unlike many novels of this period, the paper is of good quality, the font is of a good size and there is a lot of white space, in other words it is very easy to read. *** CONTENTS: Introduction by D C Moylan in which is stated that this translation was done without "the remotest view to publication." There follows a brief life of the author , also by Moylan. This French classic was first published in 1731, initially it was banned in France .
