A classic Victorian sporting manual covering all aspects of sports and games with a particular emphasis on field sports but also covering aquatic sports, boating, swimming, horse racing and the veterinary care of horses and dogs. Among the rural games and outdoor amusements are cricket, archery, curling and skating, riding and driving (carriages). 'Foot-ball' appears in a section entitled 'Minor games with ball,' as 'a game much in vogue in some rural districts, but it is chiefly played at Rugby, and one or two other public schools.' He became editor of The Field in 1857. This second edition appeared in 1856, the same year as the title's first publication.
