Abolitionist work from Smith H. Platt (1829-1912), Connecticut doctor, Methodist minister, and author. The book as stated on the title page, "published for the benefit of the fugitive," is a fictional work with historic elements which details the capture of a couple in western Africa and their subsequent hardships. The brutalities of the transatlantic voyage are described in particularly graphic detail, furthering the author's intent of illustrating the savagery of the slave trade. The short book ends on a somewhat positive note. The son of the couple, who was born to them on a plantation in Georgia and sent to work in Virginia, escapes to his freedom in the North, where he still resides: ".kind reader, if. your heart now prompts to some act of kindness to this son of misfortune, lend your aid in the circulation of this book, as its profits will be sacredly devoted to its use."
