Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. MATTE-PAINT POTTERY OF THE TEWA, KERES AND ZUNI PUEBLOS, Francis H. Harlow, softcover, illustrated with numerous photographs and drawings, 1973. ITEM CONDITION: very good. The text block and illustrations are in fine condition with no tears, dog ears, or marks. There is no bookplate or signature of a prior owner. This is not a library item nor a remainder. The heavy-stock wraps are in very good condition (some discoloring along edges; discolored spine with ripples). 10 x 7, 271 pages, 23 ounces XX [From the preface] Pueblo Indian pottery has been decorated with any of several different materials. These include: 1. Mineral matte paint, in colors of red, orange, brown and black: 2. Vegetal matte paint, a sooty black color only: Glaze paint, in colors of black, brown, green and rarely other hues: 4. Commercial oil or water-soluble paints. In this book the discussion is almost entirely restricted to pottery with either of the first two types. Hopi pottery is omitted because there has been no opportunity for a detailed study of the very complex history of pottery styles. Other Pueblos have been omitted for the sake of brevity. What remains is a study of most of the historic- period ceramics of the New Mexico Pueblos, together with a description of Tewa ceramics in the late prehistoric period. This book is intended as a reference work for the archaeologist whose investigations bring him into contact with late pueblo ceramic problems, as well as to be readable by the nonspecialist with more than a casual interest. The introductory chapter, the rather generalized glossary, and a large number of illustrations will serve, hopefully, to increase the meaningfulness to this latter type of reader.
