Beschreibung
An insightful biographical account into the life and works of landscape and figure painter, William James Muller. First edition, being the first published biography of William James Muller. With original letters and an account of his travels and of his principal works. Beautifully illustrated with tipped in lithographs, photographs, paintings and sketches "by the artist's own hand". Collated complete with seventeen plates and a vignette title page. Müller was born at Bristol, the son of J. S. Müller, a Prussian from Danzig, curator of the Bristol museum. He first studied painting under James Baker Pyne. His early pictures were mostly of the scenery of Gloucestershire and Wales, and he learnt much from his study of Claude, Ruysdael, and earlier landscape-painters. In 1833 he exhibited at the Royal Academy for the first time, showing Destruction of Old London Bridge-Morning. Handsomely bound in a half crushed morocco binding, by H. Sotheran and Co. In a smart half crushed morocco binding, with gilt lettering to the spine. Externally, generally smart, with only some very light rubbing to the cloth covered boards. Previous owner's armorial bookplate to the front pastedown, and binder's stamp to the verso of the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound and bright throughout. Page are generally clean although with the odd spot and handling mark. Very Good Indeed. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers LTH26-G-10
