Two Volumes bound as one: Memoirs bound first and The Sailor at the rear. Memoirs published in London: J. Walker, 1785, First Edition. The Sailor a Poem published Printed and Sold by the Author, M Angus and Son, Printers, Side, Newcastle , First Edition. Extremely scarce. The British Library dates this at around 1800. George Anne Bellamy (née O'Hara; 23 April 1727 16 February 1788) was an Irish actress. She took leading roles at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Her success was rapid, participating in the rivalry for popular favour in Romeo and Juliet in 1750, playing with Garrick at Drury Lane, while Barry and Mrs. Cibber played at Covent Garden. She was thought the more charming of the Juliet s. Mrs. Bellamy was popular, and she was received in the best society. She forfeited her reputation by her liaisons. Her last appearance was at Drury Lane on 24 May 1785 in her own benefit concert. She was unable to act but spoke a short address to the audience. The same year she published "An Apology for the Life of George Anne Bellamy" in six volumes. The salacious work was said to be ghost written by Alexander Bicknell. She lost her beauty early, and her later life was unhappy due to her extravagance and recklessness. She died in poverty in 1788 in Edinburgh. Approximately 7 inches tall Condition Report Externally Spine fair condition gilt titles, 5 set of double gilt lines dividing 6 compartments, 5 of which have gilt decoration, leather is cracked, worn with loss top and tail. Joints poor to fair condition front joint has been repaired, rear joint cracked but holding. Corners good condition bumped and worn. Boards good condition half brown/marbled boards. Page edges good condition tanned and foxed. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition front hinge repaired, paper intact to rear hinge. Paste downs good condition lightly tanned with foxing to each corner on front and rear paste downs. End papers good condition lightly tanned with foxing to each corner to both front and rear end papers, pencil annotation. Title good and poor condition tanned and foxed, title page to The Sailor is torn and repaired along with the first page to the gutter see photos. Pages good condition pages 163-176 are creased at the bottom corner, at the rear of the book there is a scarce poem The Sailor printed for and sold by The Author, the title page of this poem is badly foxed and has some tears, one of which has been repaired, the poem is 48 pages, all pages are tanned and foxed throughout with page 48 damaged with loss to the gutter and repaired.
