A first edition of the account of his voyages by William Scoresby, the English scientist, clergyman, and Arctic explorer. The work includes his account of the so-called Mary Russell murders, in which during a cargo run to Barbados by the ship of that name the Captain murdered seven of his crew. He bound them to the floor and systematically killed them with a crowbar and axe. Also included are: Sabbaths in the Arctic Regions Loss of the Esk Whaler A Glance at Iceland (A Glance at Iceland had previously been published in 'Winter's Wreath') Scoresby was introduced to exploring the Northern latitudes by his father, who was a whaler. For twenty one years Scoresby held the record for the highest latitude obtained: 81°30' N. lat. (19° E. long). Has been bound without contents pages ix and x Inserted in the book is a note to one Mrs Pearce from the Rev. A. Crookes Hull. It informs her of the settling of her accounts, and in dated 20/12/43. In half calf with marbled boards. Externally sound, with some rubbing to the extremities and spine. Marking to the boards. With a contemporary ink inscription to the front pastedown.
