"Some time ago, my lifelong friend, June Saine Level said, "You know, Charlie, you should write down some of the things you remember about Fort Pierce as you were growing up. Those who actually experienced the town are fast disappearing." (A comforting thought!). I considered her suggestion for a moment and put it on the back burner. Then suddenly my life changed -- I I had a total hip replacement and was to be more or less immobilized for six months -- no bending, no leg crossing, no inward turning of feet. How was I to spend my day? My favorite sport is gardening -- mowing, edging, pruning, planting, and weed-pulling. Now that was out. At first, I went to the physical therapist three times a week in Vero Beach (that used up about two hours); daily I wrote in my journal about my day the day before (that took about fifteen minutes); and I read a lot (six to eight hours). Ask my advice about any mystery writer in the world, and I'll give it to you: Josephine Tey, Edgar Allen Poe, Michael Nava, Richard North Patterson, James Patterson, Agatha Christie, Minette Walters, Dorothy Sayers, John Grisham, Peter Bower, Colin Dexter, George Simenon -- I could go on forever! After several weeks of this routine, I remember my friend's suggestion, took pen to hand, cleaned out the cobwebs, and began to write. Without any particular plan in mind, I started recording my memories of Second Street in the 1930s and 1940s. As I got into the writing, I drew a map of the street from Orange Avenue to Avenue A and located the shops, stores, and offices where I remembered their being. Do not forget you who know the town and may read these words that memory can deceive. Faulkner wrote: "Memory believes before knowing remembers. Believes longer than recollects, longer than knowing even wonders." Moreover, the incidents I report, while containing a modicum of truth, have been embellished to satisfy my ambition to exercise my imagination. The names of people and places are, I believe, accurate, except in Part V where I have used fictitious names to protect the innocent (namely me). What people did or thought is based on what I would have done or thought in the same situation and, of course, on conjecture. (If two people are sitting on a beach seeming to watch the sidewalk pedestrian traffic, that is what I say they are, in fact, doing.) So, what I have written is a kind of social history of Fort Pierce embellished by devious memory and devilish imagination." - Charles R. Croghan, Jr., 2005 -- from the Introduction.
