An apparent presentation copy, with Roswell Smith wife s personal card, "Mrs. Roswell Smith, 39 Fifth Avenue," affixed to the free endpaper. From the library of Richard Watson Gilder, with the iconic editor s bookplate on the front endpaper and single annotation beside an article he had written about Roswell Smith, which Cable quoted at length in this volume. Smith, the president of the Century Company, hired Gilder as editor of the company's magazine. Smith gave Gilder a free hand in forming editorial policy, and his winning ways brought the magazine a host of celebrity authors, including Mark Twain and Ulysses S. Grant.
