First Edition ('A-1 on the copyright page, NAP). Here is a curious book that has survived time. It is 295 pages long. It ends with a Bibliography of three pages. Edward W. Stitt was the Associate Superintendent of Schools for New York City at the time of this book's publication. The introduction was written by the 'Former Commissioner of Education of the State of New York. Serious folks. I've rated the book Very Good. Published in 1925, it's imperfections are fewer than to be expected. Foremost, it is square and very solidly bound, from cover to cover, no binding issues. The covers are in pretty decent shape, only light soiling, some fading of the gilt on the spine (but still quite legible), quite bright gilt lettering on the front, remarkably no rubbing at the corners, the six edges are in very good shape, the top page edge has a little bit of dust soiling, (not much a not affecting the actual pages), the middle and bottom pages are perfectly clean. And, happily that is the case for the pages as well. They appear to be perfectly clean. In scrolling through, several times now, I haven't come upon any soiling at all. There is a vague top corner crease, a semi-crease, on a good number of the pages, the kind of thing that is typically the consequence of a bump to the book or perhaps something pressing, not the kind a crease that comes from someone turning down the corners. I also saw five consecutive pages with a tip of the bottom corner crease. But, overall, the pages are in very nice condition. They are supple, not stiff. They are, as would be expected, somewhat age- toned. On the rear inside cover there is a little bit of a thin fissure line, but no tear. On the blank first front end paper there is a small scuff at the top right-hand corner, my guess a price sticker was removed. That's the whole story. Interesting book for somebody in the education field. I've priced it quite inexpensively. From the preface: 'The author has made a careful examination of the course of study in English of a number of our largest cities. Such study reveals a general agreement among educators that memorizing of standard poems and short prose selections should be a required part of the course in English.' and 'In the conclusion, it is well to emphasize that memory work is not mere word retention. We must develop a high appreciation of literary beauty, and store the mind with selections which shall result in higher ethical standards, and create a sincere desire to be worthier citizens and more patriotic Americans.'.
