Clean pages, illustrations and plates with light tanning and mild foxing throughout. More pronounced to free endpapers and pastedowns. Pen inscription to front free endpaper. Hinges are slightly cracked with exposed netting. Binding remains firm. Boards have mild edge-wear with slight rubbing to surfaces and bumping to corners. Gilt lettering is bright and clear. Minor wear marks to boards. Unclipped jacket. Panels and spine have light edgewear with tears and creases. Minor sunning to spine. Moderate tanning and wear marks to flaps, panels and spine. Original publisher's red cloth - gilt embossed to the spine. The text supported by numerous photographic reproductions in b/w. A former owner's name and date in blue biro to the head of the front endpaper. Some light or slight spotting to the endpapers. The jacket has not been price-clipped. It has an expertly repaired short (and slightly open at its head) tear to the head of the front panel. There is a slightly open short nick to the head of the spine. Slight and uniform fading to the spine of the jacket - the titles in black remain completely legible. Light dust-soiling to the rear panel. A very good, clean, tight copy in similar jacket. Kirkman, Fort Jesus, January 1968'. James Spedding Kirkman (1906-1989) was Warden of Coastal Historical Sites of Kenya for many years, and is considered a pioneer of Swahili archaeology. This is Kirman's introduction to the history of the coast of East Africa, with details on monuments such as mosques, palaces, forts and pillar tombs. Illustrated throughout with black-and-white photographs, with a foreword by Sir Mortimer Wheeler. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper.
