This 1st edition collection of 9 essays on various scientific subjects was published towards the end of his life. Hardback cover in crimson cloth, faded gold spine titles. Cover scuffed, spine worn & frayed at top & bottom. Text has been annotated in pencil by original owner, whose name & date (1893) is written on flyleaf & nameplate pasted inside front cover. Endpapers slightly foxed, pages have been cut so edges are uneven. Overall good condition. Note mysterious inscription on title page below author's name which appears to read 'In Juden/"Huxley. A.".
