A VG or slightly better copy that has been sympathetically re-furbished to the spine (retaining the original) - by a highly-skilled bookbinder - and now shows as a very nice copy indeed. Black end-papers (neatly replaced). Rare first edition of Sidgwick's principal written contribution to the field of ethics and 19th century utilitarian philosophy. Now regarded as one of the best works of moral philosophy ever written. Sidgwick was one of the foremost proponents of Utilitarianism, in which he argues for a utilitarian approach to ethics. Especially noteworthy is his discussion of the various principles of what he calls common sense morality i.e., the morality accepted, without systematic thought, by most people.
