1931. First edition. 255pp., 5 pages of black and white illustrations, and a plan of Moscow on the endpapers. Vladimir Brunovsky was an 'agricultural expert' who took part in the revolution of 1917 and an active ally of the Bolsheviks, and in 1920 severed his connection with them. He spent four years in the Moscow dungeons, and in this book he relates what he saw and endured. The book is a fascinating account of the brutality of the Bolshevik regime under Stalin, and details the operations of the secret police. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and blind-stamped titling on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and soiling on the boards and light bumping to the corners. There is a little damage to the cloth on the tip of the bottom rear corner. The spine is slightly darkened with bumping to the spine ends and there is a little damage to the cloth at the top of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with a W.H. Smith library label on the back of the front free endpaper that has been overlaid with a later ex libris label bearing a price of 1/-.
