This late 20th century decorative book is a celebrated non-fiction novel by John Berendt, author signed. The book, Berendt's first, became a New York Times Best-Seller in the mid 1990s for 216 weeks following its debut and remains the longest-standing New York Times Best-Seller. The book was subsequently made into Clint Eastwood's 1997 film adaptation starring Kevin Spacey and John Cusack. According to Roger Ebert, the book exists as a conspiracy between the author and reader. Berendt paints a portrait of a city so eccentric, so dripping with Southern Gothic weirdness, that it can't survive for long when it's removed from the life-support system of our imagination.
