In 1797 he began his military career as a Royal Prussian Lieutenant in the Second Engineers Brigade; taught fortifications and fortress war at the Military Engineering Academy in Potsdam. Compiled the "Encyclopädie der Kriegswissenschaften und der Kriegskunst". He was a prolific scientist who wrote on astronomy, geodesy, economics and architecture. He was the first to "apply mathematics for the well-being of the state and its citizens, not so much to questions of distribution and political welfare as to economic law and theory, and above all to a multitude of technical questions that fall under the jurisdiction of the government: structural engineering in construction inspections; ballistics for artillery; mechanics and machinery in mills, transport, manufacturing, and mining." - Rüdiger Campe: "The Game of Probability: Literature and Calculation from Pascal to Kleist" (2012).
