John Milton, born December 1608 is widely regarded as one of the preeminent writers in the English language. A strong believer in free speech and freedom of the press, Milton is known to have written openly against censorship. He reached international renown during his lifetime, in part to his writing in Latin, Greek and Italian, as well as in English. His influence can be felt in the work of many of his literary successors, including William Blake, and later authors such as George Eliot and Thomas Hardy. Collated complete. Corners good condition bumped and worn. Boards good condition vellum binding over flexible card, yapp board edges, blind tooled borders with gilt decoration albeit rubbed and worn in places, the vellum is marked and worn, 3 ribbon ties (one missing). Page edges good condition top edge gilt, fore and bottom edges uncut, tanned and foxed. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition intact. Paste downs good condition plain, lightly tanned with some foxing. End papers good condition plain, tanned and foxed. Title good condition red and black text, small b/w vignette to the centre, lightly tanned with some foxing to the edges.
