A very scarce series of tracts, essays, meditations and poetry by the Scottish surgeon and devotional writer, James Meikle. First thus, the first edition of this particular collection. Published posthumously. Each section has a separate half-title, as called for. Meikle's writings include meditations on vanity, the enjoyment of god, the love of Christ and the rational world. There are essays displaying Meikle's thoughts on marriage and heaven and hell. In addition, there is a section on sayings, private readings on the Psalms of David and a poem entitled 'Emmanuel'. James Meikle grew up in humble means. He wished to study at Edinburgh for the ministry, however due to poverty and his father's death he was unable to do so. He attended some medical lectures at Edinburgh and returned to his home town in 1750 to practise as a surgeon. However, this did not work and he entered the navy. Many of his 'Meditations' were written during his time in the navy. This book contains a variety of works, which provide insight into the inner mind of a humble surgeon from Carnwath in the late eighteenth century. In a half calf binding with paper covered boards. Binder's stamp to the front pastedown, W Brand, Wooler. Externally, smart with patches of light rubbing to the boards and spine. Front joint is tender, with the hinge slightly strained but remaining firm. Rear hinge is also slightly strained but firm. Prior owner's inscriptions to the endpapers and title page have been excised professionally, with only faded evidence left, possibly reading 'James Geary' or 'Gray'. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned. Scattered spots. Good. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 685L9

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the spiritual pitfalls of our earthly attachments and explores the futility of seeking happiness in worldly pursuits. The author, a Christian minister writing during the 18th century, argues that those who seek fulfillment in riches, relationships, or children will only find disappointment, as all earthly things are transient and ultimately unsatisfying. Only in a relationship with God can true happiness be found. The author encourages readers to focus on the eternal rather than the temporal, and to seek their ultimate joy in the heavenly realm. This book offers a timeless message about the dangers of idolatry and the importance of placing our hope in God alone, providing valuable insights for anyone seeking to deepen their faith and find lasting contentment.
