[1924]. Duodecimo (5" x 7.5"), cream colored wraps, string tied. 21pp. Illustrated with two tipped on photographs of ladies in the kitchen and the dormatory. Laid in are two broadsheets; one describing the courses and their times, and the other their prices. The date of the printing of the pamphlet was assumed based upon the dates on the course sheet. In addition is the application for registration, which also asks one to state their race. The wraps are worn at the edges and there is some toning and a few spots. Internally very good, as are the inserted items. OCLC shows three copies, all later editions. Printed by Thomas Todd Company, Boston. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 19334

Fannie Merritt Farmer
Gebraucht Soft cover

Verkäuferbewertung 5 von 5 Sternen 5 Sterne, Erfahren Sie mehr über Verkäufer-Bewertungen

Soft cover. Zustand: Good. Illustrated Edition. This is a collection of culinary ephemera, including a rare handwritten/signed letter from American culinary expert FANNIE MERRITT FARMER to her colleague ALICE BRADLEY, cook and educator who taught at "Miss Farmer's School of Cookery." The letter was written on official "Miss Farmer's School of Cookery" paper and comes with its original envelope - the return address on the envelope is "Miss Farmer's School of Cookery - 50 Huntington Ave., Boston." The mailing address was handwritten by Fannie Farmer. Also included is Alice Bradley's personal copy of the book "Miss Farmer's School of Cookery" with her name and the date July 18, 1938 written on the front cover. Page 45 has handwritten notes at the top, presumably in Bradley's hand. On the book's title page, Bradley is listed as "Principal"; she is also listed on the "Instructors" page as "Principal - Boston Cooking School, succeeded by Miss Farmer's School of Cookery." Page 30 has a photograph of Bradley accompanied by a brief biographical sketch. Found within the book was a separate page (not associated with the book) with a photograph, presumably taken at the Cooking School. Exceedingly scarce - items signed by Farmer are rarely seen on the market. The Letter reads as follows: "November 17, 1912. My dear Miss Bradley: It is now time for me to go home but I am anxious for you to [illegible] me of the New Books so must get it off tonight. It will I am sure seem like an old friend and why could it be otherwise you helped so many years in its peek [sic] creation - I am doing just a trifle more than I have any right to attempt but I am so anxious to have things go well. Shall be glad to see you next week. Have tried the frosting and found it good. Affect. yours, Fannie M. Farmer." FANNIE MERRITT FARMER was a pioneering American cookery expert, best known for authoring "The Boston Cooking School Cook Book" - the 1st to use standardized measurements in recipes. She displayed a great aptitude and fondness for cooking in her high school years, and with the encouragement of her parents, she entered the "Boston Cooking School" where she graduated in 1889. She was asked to remain as assistant director, and in 1894 she became head of the school. Although reticent, she nevertheless became much sought after as a lecturer. She left the school in 1902 to open her own "Miss Farmer's School of Cookery," which was designed to train housewives rather than teachers, institutional cooks, or servants. Farmer's lasting contribution was twofold: the introduction of standardized level measurements in recipes, and the "Boston Cooking School Cook Book," first published in 1896 and still a best-seller today. Her recipes were personally tested (including by Alice Bradley - see below) and, thanks to accurate measurements, easy to follow successfully. ALICE BRADLEY (1875-1946) attended the "Boston Cooking School" (which Fannie Farmer was the Director of at the time), where she and other students tested recipes for "The Boston Cooking School Cook Book" written by Farmer. When Farmer opened her own school, "Miss Farmer's School of Cookery," in Boston she offered Bradley a position there where, because of her education, she could teach courses in nutrition. Bradley remained there for nine years and then left to teach at the New York School of Cookery. When Farmer died in 1915, Bradley bought her own school and stayed there as principal until 1944. In 1916, Bradley became the cooking editor for "The Woman's Home Companion" magazine. Condition: The paper is lightly age-toned and has two horizontal crease/fold lines. No tears or stains. The envelope has a tear at the left edge, where it was opened. The text block of the book has detached from the covers. Soiling and foxing to the covers; light stain at the top-left front cover corner. The pages have occasional foxing, primarily to the illustrated pages. An occasional page has a paperclip outline at the top edge. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers ABE-1740516068269
