It was intended as a work of reference for individuals within the industry, while also providing a key history of the railway and their companies.The book is divided into five main sections, those being the history of the railway, the works of the railway, general mechanical engineering, economic questions, and foreign railways.Vol I includes 'The History, Constitution, and Management of Railways', with five black-and-white plates as well as in-text illustrations.Vol II continues 'The History, Constitution, and Management of Railways', followed by 'The Design, Construction, and Maintenance of Railway Works'. Includes five black-and-white plates.Vol III continues 'The Design, Construction, and Maintenance of Railway Works', with five black-and-white plates, one of which is folded.Vol IV continues 'The Design, Construction, and Maintenance of Railway Works', as well as 'Railway Mechanical and Electrical Engineering'. A few marks to boards with minimal edge wear to extremities. Light bumping and fading to head and tail of spine, with fading primarily to raised bands of joints. Front board to Vol VII is particularly faded. Bumping to corner of rear board to Vol III. Light spotting to text block. Front hinge starting to Vol III and IV. Front hinge is strained to Vol VII. A bit of offsetting to endpapers. Internally, firmly bound, with binding loosening a bit more towards the middle of some volumes, particularly Vol VII. Pages are bright throughout, with the odd spot particularly to the first and last few pages of text. Frontispiece has detached from binding in Vol VI and Vol VII.
