Contents bright and clean throughout. Bound in full green art nouveau pictorial cloth, designed by Talwin Morris (1865-1911) in the 'Glasgow Style' typified by Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928). Morris worked for the publishers Blackie in Glasgow from 1893 as Art Director, and later produced a series of outstanding geometrical influenced bindings for Greshams (a Blackie subsidiary). From the foreword: Modern Power Generators deals with the production of Steam, Electric, and Gas power, and with the principal applications of power in Modern life. It describes the arrangement and construction of the most characteristic types of generators and engines, and gives some historical account of their development, and considerable attention to a consideration of the principles involved. It discusses, among the Steam developments, Steam Generators, Reciprocating Engines, the Steam Turbine, and the Locomotive; with a description of the Continuous-Brake systems, upon which depends the safe use of the locomotive in practice. A section is devoted to Continuous and Alternating Current Generators and Motors, while another deals with all forms of Gas-producers and Internal-Combustion Engines, with the application of the Vapour Engine to the Motor Car. Each of the sections is fully illustrated, not only with external views of the machines, but also with diagrams and detail drawings which clearly explain their actions; and in many cases the individual parts have in addition been named and indexed. A very important and notable feature of the book is the introduction of Composite Sectional Models, which convey a complete idea of the machines represented, and enable the arrangement and details of construction to be studied with a degree of thoroughness that is not possible from any ordinary illustration.
