xii (inc. Title page) +448 + 35 page index rear. Contemporary/original Boards fair, lacks spine, front detached inside owner initials & 14 March 1774. Contents Fair to very good, tipped in signature of J. Bridges top Title page, some edge and corner staining, about 50 pages near front have the corner rounded/cut not affecting text, a few corner folds, some edge dirt. all text easy to read, many pages good or very good. rough cut pages as published, states 7 engravings/maps. This book contains 6, 2 fold out maps (from drawings by the Author) & 4 small engraving (all in Very Good condition). The book starts with 6 pages of manuscript notes ( one with a 1787 date) before Title page, also contains 7 pages of manuscript notes bound in. Also some manuscript notes on a few pages. (most of the manuscript notes possibly by John Bridges the Author/historian of Northamptonshire?) . The book Contains An Account of the first Introduction and Progress of Christianity in that Diocese, until the end of William the Conqueror's Reign. Also a Description of the Situation, Fabric, Times of all Churches, Collegiate, Conventual, Parochial, and of other Religious Places, monuments, catalogues of Abotts, some interesting detailed a/c's and lots more. Author John Burton born Ripon, Studied at St John's College, Cambridge, Leyden, Paris, and Rheims for his MD. Returning in 1838, to York where he helped to found the York Hospital, becoming its first physician. In later years he became known as an antiquarian, and Author, This volume is sometimes called volume one, he was going to write a 2nd volume, he collected and compiled a lot more, but may have sold them. He never finished/published any other volumes, so This title is the only volume published. .
