These paintings are so striking that you may be tempted to skip the essays and the chronology of Louis's life and career; which would be a shame.Morris had an interesting life, He did all his work in the studio he converted from the 12 x 14 foot dining room of his apartment. This meant he was working with canvases twice the size of his studio preventing him from being able to actually see what he was working on all at once. No written description, photographs, or witness accounts exist that describe what his actual working methods were though. It is known that he "poured" each painting, from behind the canvas, so the paint soaked through to the front of painting. At one point: he destroyed nearly all his paintings from 1955, 1956 & 1957." (an estimated 300 or so canvases). As the 50's become the 60's he finally begins to have some success; recognition, a little money, greater and greater confidence, a gallery show planned for mid-1962. On July 1, 1962 he's diagnosed with lung cancer; on September 7, 1962 he dies at his home in Washington, DC, and on October 15, 1962 his first big gallery show opens in New York City.
