This was the first of Naipaul's books to turn away from his native West Indies and to deal with English characters in an English scene. Although they are now over sixty years old, both book and dust jacket are impressively well preserved. The colour of the brown cloth-bound boards is as strong and even as new and there are no marks, scratches or bumps; all edges are straight, all corners are sharp. The text block is square and tightly bound. All edges of the text block are spotless and the brown stain on the top edge (which matches the colour of the boards) is still present and unfaded. Internally, all pages are clean and bright with no marks or inscriptions of any kind. The dust jacket, which is protected by a cellophane cover, also looks new and unblemished but closer inspection reveals some faults: there are some tiny chips along the top edge and a short graze along the fold where the spine panel meets the back panel; also a single spot on the fold where the spine panel meets front panel.
