Professor Dixon's First Case. 7.75"x5", 234 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. As nice a group of people, these residents of suburban Plumhill, as you'd ever hope to meet; but one of them is murdered. Professor Dixon - so tal that he is called Totem - drives his battred car into the little town in search of a vacation and time to write a book. He borrows a house, acquires a kitten and young Joey to cook his meals; but in the sudden rush of a summer storm, murder is at his doorstep. The unwilling actors in this small-town drama are people we all know: Talkative Mrs. Douglas, who has it in for Mr. Sylvester, curator of the local gallery, because he has lost her cherished Athena; Eva and Larry Moore, who help, one in taking notes and the other on the police force; Miss Pilsbury, who has seen better days and takes paying guests; Miss Haddie, who owns the fabulous amber beads and plays the harpsichord; young Williams, the artist, and the unhappy Morrison. Everybody knows everybody else's business, Plumhill being no exception to this small-town rule, but the roots of this crim go deep. Mr. Dixon uncovers them one by one, until the final dramatic resolution in Miss Pilsbury's dining room. Mary Richart, under the spell of Professor Dixon, has taken a sabbatical from magazine fiction and written her first long mystery, MURDER IN THE TOWN. Mrs. Richart says of her amateur detective, whom she created in a short story, "Mr. Dixon had an interesting life before I got hold of him I'm sure he's going to have an even more intersting life now." Mrs. Richart claims an "undramatic" life. "I was born on a farm outside of Atlanta - my mother having returned to the ancestral land or the event - and I've always seemed to resent it. At least, the third day in the 'country,' in any state, always sees me taking bus, train, airplane or scooter for the nearest city." Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
