A very scarce copy of this collection of marine works by William Clark Russell, the first edition. A collection of sea stories by William Clark Russell, English writer best known for his nautical works. These works form a marine encyclopaedia, with many adventurous and exciting stories illustrating the experiences of a large number of sea-faring people contributing to this volume.The first edition of this work, very scarce in all editions. With advertisements to the rear.Previous ownership signature to the front pastedown, L Harrison Matthews, British zoologist, especially known for his research and writings on marine mammals. From the library at Julian Park, Hertfordshire, belonging to Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie. Audrey was the youngest daughter of an Anglo-American lumber and steel millionaire, sister to Edward James, a key figure in the Surrealist movement, and the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII. She was an English socialite known for her beauty and for charming various wealthy men, she was included in The Book of Beauty by Cecil Beaton. A patron of the arts, she assisted Viscount Carlow financially in the publication of limited editions of numerous works by leading literary figures such as T E Lawrence, James Joyce, Wyndham Lewis, and others. A hedonistic pursuer, she was recognised as one of the 'Bright Young Things'. In the original publisher's illustrated full cloth binding. Externally sound with minor shelf wear and some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, with some darkening to the spine. Previous ownership signature to the front pastedown, undated, L Harrison Matthews, British zoologist, especially known for his research and writings on marine mammals. Internally, the binding is starting to p. 1, split to p. 17. The text block following p.17 is firmly bound. The pages are generally very clean with a touch of age toning, as usual. Good.
