Beschreibung
Penguin Catalogue No. HA978. First impressions of the true first edition, published in 1968. The work was originally published as a paperback in the Pelican Books series, but this copy is one of the rarely found hardback issues, produced specifically for lending libraries, but is NOT ex-library. Fully illustrated throughout the book. ***Please note that the dustwrapper has been laminated by a previous owner. ***Near fine in black cloth-covered boards, with gilt titles to the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked. The gilt is still beautifully bright. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges clean - just lightly foxed. No bumps or creases. Corners sharp. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. Apart from some offsetting to the endpapers the interior pages are clean, and the paper remains unbrowned (unlike the paperback versions of this title which used inferior paper stock). ***In a very good dustwrapper, which retains the original publisher's printed price of 24s 0d net on the front flap. The dustwrapper is complete, with no chips, creases or tears, however, as noted, it has been laminated by a previous owner. There is some uneven fading to the front panel (please see scans). Spine nice and clean with no fading. Dustwrapper bright. ***221 pages including a detailed Catalogue of Illustrations, Books for Further Reading and an Index at the back of the book. 200mm x 137mm. ***Contents: Editorial Foreword, Acknowledgements, Introduction, 1. Classicism and Neo-classicism 2. The Vision of Antiquity, 3. Art and Revolution, 4. The Ideal, 5. Sensibility and the Sublime, 6. Epilogue, Catalogue of Illustrations, Books for Further Reading, Index. ***'Penguin attempted to meet the demands from libraries for better wearing covers by producing hardback editions of its books. Nearly 200 titles were issued in this format between July 1967 and June 1969. However, this experiment had to be discontinued because of poor sales. The identification/numbering system of Penguins had a further prefix of 'H' added. The Pelican 'A' became 'HA' (e.g. HA43); Poetry became 'HD', English Library 'HEL', Classics 'HL' and so on.' (Penguin First Editions) ***'Penguin Library Editions are also available in bookshops for private buyers who would like to have some of their Penguins in a form which is at once attractive and durable. (Quote taken from the front flaps of the dustwrapper). ***First printing of the Penguin Library Edition, published in hardcover. As most of these editions ended up in public lending libraries, and were then discarded, copies that are not ex-library are very rarely found now. Of interest to collectors of the more unusual Penguin Books. Of additional interest, this copy comes with an original Heffers of Cambridge 1960s bookmark (please see scans) ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 8883
