First edition, first printing. The author's second book, preceded by Headhunting in the Solomon Islands (1942). Both works are based on the long letters Mytinger (1897-1980) wrote to friends and family during her travels in the Solomon Islands and Papua-New Guinea with childhood friend, fellow painter Margaret Warner. The intrepid duo only brought $400 between them, planning to support themselves by painting portraits of white colonials along the way. Octavo: 441 p. with textual photographs and illustrations and an endpaper map. Original black cloth binding, with yellow titles.
