"Not long ago I published a little book on Muscular Contraction.* In this book I wanted to record the experiences of my laboratory with muscle after the long years of isolation. I did it mainly for those who wanted to repeat some of our experiments. I struggled with the great bulk of material, stumbling over details, and the resulting book makes poor reading. Therefore, it was a rather welcome invitation when the University of Birmingham and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology invited me for a short series of lectures giving me a chance to sum up my experiences in a more digestible form. This present book contains these lectures, written at Sleepy Hollow, Tarrytown, in an atmosphere of generous American hospitality. All the electron microscopic (EM) pictures reproduced here are borrowed from M. Staudinger and G. Rózsa's research and are unstained, if not stated otherwise. Technique, data and references may be found in my book." Forword Albert Imre Szent-Györgyi (1893-1986) was a Hungarian biochemist who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1937. He is credited with first isolating vitamin C and discovering the components and reactions of the citric acid cycle.
