Rare 1884 copy in good condition with some signs of wear and age. The book contains a collection of Francis More Adlington's poems which are grouped into the categories of: Hymns, Miscellaneous, Love and Kindred Subjects, Personal, Patriotic, Anti-Slavery, and Temperance. It also contains an introductory bio written by his daughter. It is illustrated with a mounted photo frontispiece. The covers have some moderate soiling and wear with a little bit of white paint at the bottom of the spine and bottom board edges. There is some partial light cracking to the back interior hinge and a very small section of cracking towards the top of the front interior hinge; however, the binding of the book is still good and sound. All of the page edges are gold gilt. The interior is lightly toned from age but is mostly clean with just the very occasional page with a light bit of foxing, soiling, or grubbiness. Along with that there may be the very occasional page with some kind of other minor imperfection such as a tiny chip or tear, creased page corner, minor interior crack, etc. Generally though, it's a decent copy. The book measures approximately 8 1/4 inches by 6 inches and is 260 pages long.***********This book will require additional shipping charges if being sent outside of the United States***********. Frontis of Adlington, guard (illustrator). 1st ed. Two-page author's introduction. Adlngton was born in Temple Street, Boston, Massachusetts, December 24, 1789 and died in Weymouth, Mass. on Palm Sunday, April 6, 1884. His father Elisha Adlington was of English birth and his mother, Amey (Mores) Adlington was of Scotch descent. His mother waqs devotedly attached to the Church of England, into which Francis Mores was baptized at a very early age. His mother was early left a widow with 11 children and Frank was in the employ of an English wholesale merchant in Boston, named Rogers but Frank preferred to learn the tailor's trade. After setting up in business for himself, he married Mary Turell of Boston in 1812. She died in 1821. In 1824 he moved to Weymouth and in 1829 married Abigail Whitman Benson of that town. His most marked trait was patriotism and his father's home in Boston was the rendezvous for the old Revolutionary heroes and their families. When the nation called in 1812 for aid to protect their sons on the seas, he eagerly sprang forward, the only volunteer in his company. When too old to serve in the Civil War, all four of his sons volunteered. He was known as Grandp a Adlington to all the children in the village, many who visited with a flower, song or poem, or even a kind word. His earliest published poem was written on "Woman" in whose praise he always sang. It appeared in the Ladies' Magazine, Boston. His pen was always on te side of freedom. A friend and admirer of Garrison, he often contributed to the Liberator. A strong advocate of temperance, his song rang through the country in old Washingtonian times. Brown binding, gilt title box on front cover, all edges gilt, first page of table of contents missing, loosened pages. G some pages loosening, rough spots to binding edges.
