London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1833, First Edition.This is the first Smith Elder edition as opposed to US and German Editions, published later in the same year. Three volumes bound in one book, half leather, gilt titles, gilt raised bands, gilt decoration to the boards. Unfortunately the spine quotes the author as "Morris" instead of "Norris". An early novel by this popular and prolific British author. William Edward Norris (18 November 1847 1925) was an English novelist and writer of short stories. Norris wrote over 60 novels; the Encyclopædia Britannica, 11th (ed), published in 1911, listed the following as his best to that date: Mademoiselle de Mersac (1880), Matrimony (1881), No New Thing (1883), My Friend Jim (1886), The Rogue (1888), The Despotic Lady (1895), Mathew Austin (1895), The Widower (1898), Nature's Comedian (1904) and Pauline (1908). Condition Report Externally Spine good condition gilt title on red label, 5 raised gilt decorated bands, 6 compartments, there is a vertical crease the full length of the spine which corresponds to the beginning of Vol. II in the book. Joints good condition gently rubbed. Corners good condition bumped and worn. Boards good condition half green leather boards with decorative gilt lines. Page edges good condition all marbled. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition both hinges have cracked and the stitches can be seen, intact. Paste downs good condition plain, lightly tanned with some foxing, there is a small booksellers label in the bottom left hand corner of the front paste down. End papers good condition plain, lightly tanned and foxed, there is a previous owners signature on one of the front free end papers. Title good condition all three title pages are lightly tanned with minor foxing. Pages good condition tanned and foxed throughout, Vol I with ink spots throughout and a pencil drawing to page 177, all olumes with some folded corners, marks and spots throughout the 3 volumes.
