The backstrip cloth lightly faded, with some toning to the free endpapers, and some fox spotting throughout, which is at times quite heavy. Very good. No dust wrapper. The author's most uncommon first book, a collection of seventeen supernatural stories, a number of which were subsequently reprinted in 'The Travelling Grave' (1948). It was a relative failure, earning him no money, but the following year Putnam published his debut novel, 'Simonetta Perkins', from which Hartley is alleged to have made a mighty £12.
