First edition; 7 1/2 x 5 3/4; pp. [4], 7-420, [2]; beige wraps, printed and ruled in black; small nicks and chips to fore-edge of wraps and corners; a few mild spots to wraps; overall in very good condition.Fedor Stepun, also known as Friedrich Steppuhn (1884 - 1965) was a Russian-German author, editor, sociologist, historian, and philosopher. He was also an army commissar under the Russian Provisional Government and director of the state experimental theatre. Deported from the Soviet Union in 1922, he settled in Germany, living, writing, and teaching in Berlin, Dresden, and Munich. A staunch opponent of Bolshevism and Nazism, his philosophical leaning have been described as neo-Kantist Transcendentalism, similar to that of Soloviev and Berdiaev.According to the author himself, in his current work, written during the Russian Civil War in letters: "The problematics and coloring of the novel, naturally, grew both from the material of my own life and from observations of the literary and philosophical environment in which I found myself after Heidelberg. On the eve of the Great War, we all lived through crises - a crisis of religious, political, and aesthetic-erotic consciousness. There was a lot of pointless preaching, artistic posing and erotic snobbery in the era.". Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 003216
