The first printing of this work in book form, after a serialized newspaper printing in EL TELÉGRAFO. Escudero was a Chihuahua native and historian of northern Mexico, and served in the House of Deputies where he strongly opposed ceding northern Chihuahua to Texas. In this work, he provides details on the population, history, and resources of Chihuahua in the turbulent early years of Mexican independence. He also describes in detail and provides figures regarding the past and present religious and military organization of the territory. In the Streeter sale catalogue, Thomas Streeter quotes Henry Wagner as describing this as "the earliest book after Independence published in the Chihuahua-New Mexico section, giving an account of the governmental and military system both before Independence and as changed since 1821." "A careful statistical summary of the old state of Chihuahua" - Graff. In addition to details on the territory, a large section near the end of the book is dedicated to a detailed analysis of the Apache, including their language, appearance, food, religious practices, diversions, methods of warfare, population, and history, as well as brief descriptions of fourteen different divisions within them including the Navajo and Jicarilla. Following the cultural and statistical details is a brief history of conflict with the Apache and the former Spanish government's relations with them, beginning from 1786. A detailed and valuable examination of Chihuahua in the early 19th century, with much content about its native inhabitants. STREETER SALE 408. GRAFF 1258. HOWES E176, "aa." PALAU 81652. GOLDSMITH-KRESS 28462.7. SABIN 22844. Modern three-quarter calf and embossed cloth, spine silver gilt, raised bands. Creases in upper corner of first 84 pages. A few spots of isolated minor foxing.
