Scarce first edition of 1777. A fascinating account of the customs, games and traditions of the 18th Century, ranging from Christmas carols and decorations, exorcising an haunted house, garlands in country churches and wells and fountains to evil spirits, Valentine's Day, Easter, sheep-shearing, the country wake and the harvest supper, etc etc. The 430-page text (plus errata page) is in good, tight condition, with a little very light age-browning in places. Light age-browning of the blank end papers. No inscriptions. 18th Century tree calf leather binding in fairly good condition, with light edge wear, the outer hinges partly cracked but secure. The spine has attractive gilt decoration and a contrasting red title panel with gilt title; slightly darkened at the base. See photographs of this copy attached.
