London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, 1805, FIRST Edition. First edition. Without the half-title. Later half leather with marbled boards, gilt titles to a fawn leather label. NOTES The first edition of Thomas Douglas, Earl of Selkirk's (1771-1820) principal work, a major contribution to political economy and the debate over the emigration crisis in Scotland, in which, as a staunch proponent of the colonization of North America, he emphasises the illogical self-interest of the various objections against highland emigration to the continent, arguing that highlanders were entitled to move to preserve their language, culture, and manners. The work is in part a defence of his continued efforts to recruit Scottish settlers for his colony on Prince Edward Island; a venture that was only partly successful. The positive reception of the book he received from reviewers assisted him in December 1806 to gain election to the House of Lords as a representative Scottish peer.
