1942, First Edition and First Printing.In the English Verse Translation by Alexander Pope, and Illustrated with the Classical Designs of John Flaxman. There are 32 plates throughout the edition. There is a " How This Book Came To Be" by John T. Winterich before the beginning of the story, as there is a "Note Upon The Translation" by Carl Van Doren . As noted on the last couple of pages of this Edition, "The illustrations for this edition .have been reproduced by photogravure in the shop of Charles Furth in New York; the reproduction has been done for a set of prints pulled from the plates engraved for John Flaxman by Parker & Blake(the Blake being William Blake!). This edition was planned by A.G. Hoffman and printed under his supervision at the Quinn & Boden Company, Inc.".Beautiful blue boarsds with tonal design around the frame of the boards. Binding is worn and smudged, but still legible.The pages are crisp and in tact. The front flypaper has the prior owner's bookplate. 359 pps. In a slipcase that is in very poor condition, with some staining and tearing and the name of the Book and Author handwritten on the spine of the slipcase. The Odyssey is one of the major ancient Greek epic poems, and is the second oldest extant work of Western literature, the Iliad being the oldest. The Greek hero Odysseus, also known as Ulysses in Roman myths is returning home after the fall of Troy. It takes Odysseus ten years to reach Ithaca after the ten year Trojan War. In his absence, it is assumed he has died, and his wife Penelope and son Telemachus must deal with a group of unruly suitors, who compete for Penelope's hand in marriage.
