#48 of 375 copies issued. ¼ red morocco over marbled paper covered boards. Spine lettered in gilt. Deckled fore and bottom-edges. Printed by hand on water marked handmade paper made by Henry Morris at Bird & Bull. One leaf is made from the shirts and underwear of various contemporary bookmen; another is taken from a blank book of old Dutch paper. Taylor A8. This was by far the largest Bird & Bull edition to date. It took Mr. Morris thirty weeks just to make the paper used for it. Pale lilac endpapers. The book was the result of a trip the Morrises took to Europe in 1967. In original translucent dust jacket. 110, (1) pages, illustrated with fine red and black reproductions of European & American old ream wrappers, including a tipped-in miniature Dutch engraving of a man packing paper in bales. As Voorn writes in a preface to his 108-page extended essay, "the ream-covers described illustrate the position of Amsterdam as an international center of paper commerce from the seventeenth century onward". printed on deckle-edge handmade paper. Indices of mills, papermakers, importers, and merchants. Includes the usually missing separate portfolio of two Dutch ream wrappers reproductions by C&I Hong.
